Culver Hole, Gower Peninsula, April 2025

Culver Hole is a strange, man-made structure hidden in a narrow limestone cleft in the cliffs at Port Eynon on the Gower Peninsula, South Wales. A dry-stone wall pierced with small window and door openings seals the fissure some 50 feet above the beach, and no one is entirely sure why it was built. Theories range from a medieval pigeon loft (a columbarium; "culver" is an old word for dove) to a smugglers’ hideout tied to local legend.

A drone was the only practical way to get close: the structure is set into a sheer cliff face with no safe ground access, and only becomes fully visible from the air or from a boat offshore. An April visit brought wide aerial views taking in the full sweep of the Gower coastline either side.
