Who I am
This website is run by me, Mark Butland (Butters), the photographer behind MyPhotographyButters, from Hampshire in the UK. If you have any questions about your data, email info@myphotographybutters.co.uk.
The short version
This is a personal photography portfolio. There are no accounts, no comment forms and nothing to buy. I don’t sell or share your data. The only cookies set for visitors are Google Analytics cookies, and only if you accept them. I also count visits with Jetpack Stats, which doesn’t use cookies.
What’s collected and why
Analytics (only if you accept)
Google Analytics tells me which pages and photos are viewed, roughly which country visitors are in, what kind of device they use and how they found the site. It does this with cookies and a random ID, and it doesn’t tell me who you are. Google Analytics doesn’t log or store IP addresses.
Lawful basis: your consent. You can change your mind at any time using Cookie settings, also at the foot of every page.
Visitor stats (Jetpack)
I use Jetpack Stats, run by Automattic (the company behind WordPress.com), to count page views and see which photos people look at. It doesn’t use cookies. To count your visit, Automattic receives your IP address, your browser type and language, your country, the page you’re viewing and the page you came from. I only ever see totals, never anything that identifies you.
Lawful basis: legitimate interests (understanding which of my photographs people look at, without cookies).
Server logs
Like every website, the server records technical details of each visit: your IP address, the date and time, the page requested and your browser type. These logs keep the site secure and working. They’re held by my hosting provider, IONOS, for a limited period. Jetpack also checks attempts to log in to the admin area against known attacks, to keep the site secure.
Lawful basis: legitimate interests (keeping the site running and secure).
Emails
If you email me, I use your address and message only to reply. I don’t add anyone to a mailing list.
Lawful basis: legitimate interests (answering your message).
Fonts
The site’s typefaces are loaded from Google Fonts, so Google’s servers receive your IP address in order to send them. Google Fonts doesn’t set cookies.

WordPress sets its own login cookies for the site’s admin area, which only I use.
Links to other sites
The site links to my Instagram and Facebook pages. Nothing from those sites loads here. If you follow a link, their own privacy policies apply.
Who else handles data
- IONOS, which hosts the site.
- Google, for Google Analytics (only if you accept) and Google Fonts. Google may process data outside the UK, using the safeguards required by UK data protection law.
- Automattic, for Jetpack Stats and login protection. Automattic is based in the US and processes data there, using the safeguards required by UK data protection law.
Nobody else receives your data.
How long data is kept
Google Analytics keeps visit data for no more than 14 months. Jetpack Stats logs that include IP addresses are deleted after 28 days. Emails are kept only as long as needed to deal with your message.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask to see the personal data I hold about you, and ask for it to be corrected or deleted. You can also object to how it’s used, or withdraw your consent at any time. To do any of these, email info@myphotographybutters.co.uk.
If you’re unhappy with how your data has been handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top will change too.
