Old Basing Mill, Basingstoke, Hampshire, 2026
A quieter session around the historic mill at Old Basing near Basingstoke: a mallard on the millpond, a robin among the ivy, a woodland path through an archway of trees, and two red kites, one banking low through the branches, the other caught closer in flight.
Old Basing sits on the River Loddon just east of Basingstoke, and the paths around the old mill make an easy winter walk. All five photos come from one day in January 2026.
Red kites had disappeared from England by the late nineteenth century and were only reintroduced in 1989. Now they are a familiar sight over north Hampshire, and these two came low enough through the trees to fill the frame.
