Butser Hill, Hampshire, 2026
Highland cattle grazing the slopes of Butser Hill in the South Downs, from close portraits of their shaggy fringes and horns to golden-hour herd shots, with the hill's sweeping valley views and a lone walker's silhouette at sunset.
At 271 metres, Butser Hill is the highest point of the South Downs in Hampshire. This set comes from one afternoon in January 2026, and most of it belongs to the Highland cattle that graze its slopes.
They were in no hurry, which made close portraits possible: a shaggy fringe, the curve of a horn beside an ear, a wet nose filling the frame, and one caught mid-chew with its tongue out. As the sun dropped the whole herd turned gold, and the last frames look out over the valley at sunset, with a walker passing a lone tree on the ridge.
